The photographs on this website
are the work of freelance photographer Paul Gapper. Paul has been
working as a photographer for the past fifteen years while holding down a full time job as a
Manager in the catering industry. Paul bought his first camera, a
Canon T70 in 1986 to use while travelling in India and has never looked
back.
He has returned twice to India, visited Sri Lanka, Tunisia,
Egypt, Turkey, Panama, Cape Verde and many other destinations since then and has
just 'turned digital' (Cannon 20D and 5D).
Very early on in his photographic career, Paul was runner up in a major
photographic competition held by The Sunday Times and had a three-page photo
spread in Amateur Photographer. In July 2005 he won 1st Prize in the Over 18s
Non - professional Capture London's Diversity competition organized by The Greater London
Authority. Since then, his pictures have sold worldwide and he is a regular
contributor to World Religions Photo Library and Alamy. Paul's work has been
purchased by the BBC (website, BBC Education CD for schools), Dorling Kindersley
(various educational books), Thomson Travel Agents (brochure), Overseas Adventure Travel, Chicago
(front cover for 2000 brochure), a major UK supermarket chain
(packaging) and London Underground (2007 calendar), amongst
others.
Paul travels widely, both abroad and in the UK, often spending his weekends
at religious services and festivals. He researches his subject matter in
great depth and has forged significant personal contacts in diverse
religious and secular communities, often resulting in exceptional access to
areas that might be denied to other photographers. Prime examples
of this are his photographs of the
Jewish Community in North London and the Lag B'Omer festival in
Djerba, Tunisia. Paul not only values this privileged position but also the
warmth and hospitality with which he is so often received, resulting
in some remarkable portraits as well as insights into communities,
celebrations and sacred events which his photographs in turn often make
accessible to a worldwide audience.
